This map illustrates the expedition led by General Lord Jeffrey Amherst against the French at Montreal in 1760, which led to the surrender of the city in September of that year. Title: AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALIS...
Cartographer: Lotter.C
Size: 45.5*60.5cms
Printed: 1765
Ref: M67

This is a striking map of the new world, with original hand colour. Showing the colonial possesions of several nations, we see the Spanish developments in the southwest, French territories throughout Canada and the western Mississippi valley, as well as the British colonies. With suprisingly accurate depictions of rivers and coasts, this map provides a reasonably proportionate image of an expansive land. Borders are well distinguished by colour, yet there are hints of expansion as the borders of the southern colonies not only extend to the Mississippi, but continue beyond into the French Louisiana territory. The map is well complimented by a large decorative cartouche showing Native American and a European settler.Map trimmed close to left & right borders otherwise excellent condition.

Two long rivers run from California to the Rocky Mountain region, the Northernmost attaching Lake Winnepeg. Extensive note regarding explorations along the NW Coast of America, but the Sea of the West has given was to the Decouvertes Des Russes. The Mississippi River drainage is now well explored by the French, who are now shifing west following the end of the French & Indian War. A number of French forts shown, including Detroit, S. Pierre, S. Charles, S. Phillipe, Huillier, S. Francisco, and Rosalie.Cartouche,Full original colour.V.good condition.

Title: A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA FROM THE LATEST SURVEYS AND MAPS
Cartographer: Kitchen/Blair
Size: 43*58cms
Printed: 1770c London
Ref: M1149

A striking map of North America showing the political situation there between the French & Indian War and the American Revolution. With their victory in the earlier war, most of North America belonged to the French. Blair shows the British colonies extending from the east coast to the Mississippi. He does include Spanish "New Mexico" (now Texas) in the lower left corner, next to a very truncated "Louisiana." To the north, bounded by what Blair notes as the border between Virginia and Carolina according to the Charter of 1665, Blair shows lands occupied by the Kansez and Osages, implying British control of this area. Two other northern territories are indicated, again implying British control of the continent even west of the Mississippi. The map is filled with fascinating information of the continent at the end of the British period of control. Rivers, lakes, and major towns and settlements are noted. Also quite a bit of information on Indian tribes is given. Blair also notes the borders as established by the original charters for the colonies. A very decorative map of this interesting period.Superb hand colour.Very good condition.

Title: CARTE GENERALE DES DECOUVERTES DE L'AMIRAL DE FONTE, ET AUTRE NAVIGATEURS...
Cartographer: Vaugondy.R.De
Size: 29*37.5cms
Printed: 1772
Ref: M69

This map is a re-engraving of Joseph-Nicolas De l'Isle's 1752 map showing the supposed discoveries of the Spanish explorer Admiral de la Fuente. Major amongst these discoveries is de la Fuente's version of a Northwest Passage, connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific via a series of lakes and rivers. De La Fuente's "expedition" proved to be as fictional as the Northwest Passage, and De Vaugondy certainly did not subscribe to these discoveries. The map also includes the fabulous 'Mer De L'Ouest,' a feature promulgated by the De l'Isles, and vast northern lakes also attributable to de la Fuente. Discoveries attributed to other explorers, namely Spanish, English, and Russian, are also noted. This is from the folio edition and there is only the centre fold.A lovely map in perfect condition with wide margins. References: Pedley, Bel Et Utile, number 454; Phillips, Geographical Atlases, number 1195

Title: CARTE GENERALE DES DECOUVERTES DE L'AMIRAL DE FONTErepresentant...PASSAGE AU NORD OUEST
Cartographer: Vaugondy R.De
Size: 29*35cms
Printed: 1772
Ref: M71

Interesting map of the NW Coast of America and the NE Coast of Asia, based upon Jefferys map of 1768. Prior to Cook's 1st Voyage, the English, French and Russians were actively debating the cartography of the region in the North Pacific between Asia and North America. The Russian explorations of the first half of the 18th Century, including those by Behring, Tchirikow and others, had been reported by JN De L'Isle, who had worked with the Russians and was privy to their latest discoveries. The mythical voyages of De Fuca, d'Aguilar and De Font were still very much in evidence in contemporary cartography, as were concepts of a NW Passage, the Sea of the West, River of the West and other vestiges of 16th and 17th Century conjectural/mythical cartography. This map shows the Jefferys model, including a wide De Fuca based River from Puget Sound to the Atlantic over Hudson's Bay, several significant rivers flowing from the Pacific to the middle of North America, and Jesuit based water passages from the Pacific to the Arctic Seas. A massive approximation of Alaskan Archipelago is shown, along with the Russian discoveries.Uncoloured as issuedand in perfect condition. Wagner 637; Pedley 454.
