An excellent example of the Merian edition Hessel Gerritsz's map of Russia, with view of Archangelsckagoroda. The map was compiled from manuscript maps and work brought back by Isaac Massa. Includes an inset plan of Moscow which is attributed to the Crown Prince Fydor Gudonov. Richly decorated a large title cartouche, sailing ships, a compass rose, three Russian gentlemen, and a view of Archangel Sckagoroda. Excellent hand colour.Very good condition.

Superb Rare very large map of the Russian Empire. Full Title:The European Part of the Russian Empire, from Maps Published by the Imperial Academy at St. Petersburg, with the New Provinces on the Black Sea. - The Asiatic Part of the Russian Empire from the Maps Published by the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg, with the New Discoveries of Captian Cook & co. Extends from the North Sea and the Black Sea eastward as far as Siberia and the Behring Strait. Extends south to China and the Aral Sea and north to include the island of Nova Zembla and the Arctic. Color coded according to region with Russia in Europe toned in reds and pinks, and Russia in Asia in yellows and greens. This map is most interesting in its extreme eastern portions, which, when this map was drawn, had only recently been explored. The explorations of Vitus Behring are very much in evidence with regard to the form of Kamtschatka and the extreme northeast of Siberia. Shows nautical routes from Okotskoi Ostrog, in Siberia, ccross the Sea of Okotsk to Kamtschatka and the Kuril Islands. Sakhalin is curiously divided into two separate islands. Hokkaido appears as Matmay or Atkis. Identifies Behring Island off the coast of Kamtschatka, where the great Arctic navigator ultimately met his doom.Original Colour.Very good condition. Ver rare map.Copper etching by C. Mannert and edited by Adam Gottlieb Schneider und Weigel. Published in Nuremberg in 1794.(Only reference I can find is Harvard Library).Mannert maps are extremely rare.It appears that this map was never included in an atlas.Original wash colour.Cartouche.Very detailed.Some repairs in left margin and evidence of slight dampstain..not really affecting map.Otherwise a rare map in good condition.

Showing parts of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan & Turkestan, markin Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent, with engraved vignette scenes of Tartar nomadic life. The 'Great Game' was the name for the Anglo-Russian rivalry in Central Asia, with Russia pushing south to threaten British India through Afghanistan. At the time this map was published the Crimean War and the India Mutiny had made the Game more intense. Less than a decade later Independent Tartary had gone: Tashkent was annexed by Russia in 1865, and Samarkand & Bukhara came under Russian control in 1868.Good condition.
