This map of Africa is in the book of Munster's Cosmography that begins the description of Africa. The map depicts the major features of Africa. This map was first issued in Sebastian Munster’s Cosmographia. The map was unchanged from 1544 . This particular map comes from a German edition of Munster's Cosmographia of 1572. Title: AFRICA
Cartographer: D’Anania.G.L.
Size: 17.5*24.5cms
Printed: 1582 / 1598
Ref: M1783
|
RARE. The geography and placenames on the map are closely based on Abraham Ortelius’ 1570 map of Africa. For example Zanzibar is still on the southwest coast of Africa as on the Ortelius map. The hydrographical systems follow Ortelius precisely with three lakes feeding the Niger River. The sources for the other major rivers on the continent are also the same as on Ortelius’ map. This map first appeared in the third edition of D’Anania’s La Universale... of 1582, published in Venice. This is the second state of the map and was used in an edition of Ptolemy's Geography in 1598. This map is distinguished by the addition of an engraved line completely encircling Africa. Small repair not noticeable.Cropped a little close but there are margins.Very good hand colour. Good condition. Reference: Betz # 20.2. SOLD |

Very attractive map of southern Africa depicts the area just prior to the settlement of the Cape Province by the Dutch. The area shown is from the Congo River baisn around the Cape of Good Hope and up the east coast as far as northern present-day Mozambique. A good number of coastal names are given, including Mozambique Island which was an importaqnt re-supply point for ships sailing to India and points east. To the north, one of the Ptolemaic lakes thought to be the source of the Nile is shown. Information on the interior is sparse, reflecting the lack of knowledge the Europeans had about the interior of Africa. Printed: 1670 London
Ref: M1964
|
Full title:Æthiopia Superior Vel Interior Vulgo Abissinorum Sive Presbiteriioannis Imperior.
John Ogilby's work "Africa" was based on the Dutch publication of two years earlier, by Jacob van Meurs, of Olfert Dapper's "Naukeurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche ...". Using, in the main, the same copperplate maps and views, this translation was the best English account of the continent to that time and was intended to be part of a series of atlases of all parts of the world, which, in fact, was never completed. The maps, with title cartouches supported by native figures, animals and so on, and the plates were finely engraved and represent evocative European perceptions of the regions as known during the seventeenth century. Central and Eastern Africa with accurate coastal definition and the two great lakes, centrally shown as the sources of the Nile and the Congo. Some staining in top matgin well away from printed surface.Very good condition. |
