This map of Africa is in the book of Munster's Cosmography that begins the description of Africa. The map depicts the major features of Africa. Interestingly, unlike Munster's double page map of Africa, this map labels the Mountains of the Moon (Motes Lunae), the supposed source of the Nile River. This map was first issued in Sebastian Munster’s Cosmographia. The map was unchanged from 1544 . This particular map comes from a German edition of Munster's Cosmographia of 1572. Giovanni Magini's modern map of Africa from his edition of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographia. It is basically a slightly-reduced version of the D'Anania 1582 map of Africa, which in turn was modeled after Ortelius' 1570 map. The shape of Africa on the map is quite accurate for this period, and considerable geographical details along the African coasts are shown. Giovanni Magini (1555-1617), originally from Padua, was professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna. The finely-detailed copperplate for this map was engraved by Girolamo Porro of Padua (1550-1604).Right hand margin close but not affecting printed surface.Excellent condition. See Betz, Map # 34

This scarce, little map is roughly based on the Ortelius/Galle map of 1593.From: Historiae Universalis Auctorium Ulm, 1658.Ships,Strong impression.Small repair in top margin just encroaching into map professionally repaired so invisible.Otherwise very good condition.

Du Vals updated map of Sansons map of 1650,which was a a landmark map of Africa.(It is the first French map to depict significantly new information on Africa as opposed to earlier French maps, which generally copied Dutch maps. Further, the publication of this map, along with Sanson’s maps of the other continents and regions, signaled the beginning of a growing French competition with the Dutch mapmakers of the seventeenth century)Dated same date as title page of Atlas.It is a rare state in so far as I can find no other.Original colour.Very good condition.

Superb map of Africa.Extensive note on the accuracy of the Nile, the first map to have such a note. A highly innacurate map, both in shape and nomenclature. Shows both real and fictitious St. Helena Islands. The source of the Nile is inaccurately shown as two side by side lakes. A decorative, richly illustrated and highly detailed map of Africa, representing the best and worst of geographical knowledge of the continent.Very good condition.

A lovely and detailed map of Africa from Scottish mapmaker, John Thomson. This map was issued shortly before the period of extensive European exploration on the interior, so much of the continent is shown as "Unknown Parts" Thomson shows good details based on these exploration and where else he had information, such as in the Congo and Southern Africa. The map is divided (somewhat arbitrarily) into regions with lovely pastel coloring, making the map as attractive as it is interesting.Mint condition.

Based on Ortelius’ map of 1570, this is the second version of the map of Africa used in later editions of Sebastian Munster’s Cosmographia published, after Munster’s death, by S.Petri.
