"One of the many cases of duplication by the firms of Blaeu and Hondius of each other's work. Janssonius' plate is so good that it is virtually indistinguishable from Blaeu's. Cartographically this map forms a marked improvement on the Jodocus Hondius map of 1606, from which this was largely derived. It also amply illustrates the direction that engraving styles had moved, being more open and florid. The map depicts two nations' interests, both marked by their own coat of arms. The French claim, being largely present day Georgia, rests on the abortive colonial attempts of the 1560s. Blaeu makes no advance here in geography, following Hondius to the letter. The greatest improvement occurs in the northern half of the map north of Porto Royal. Whereas on the Hondius the coastline towards C. de Ste. Romano (present day Cape Fear) veered directly east, Blaeu more correctly takes it north-east, placing the cape closer to its true position of 34°. This span of coastline is approximately that of present day South Carolina's. This now present to us a more accurately proportioned Outer Banks Region, radically reduced in size but still slightly too far north. For these improvements Blaeu drew upon the extremeley rare DE EYLANDEN ..., by Hessel Gerritsz, c. 1631. The Outer Banks combine the placenames of Gerritsz and Hondius, often using two different ones for the same area such as C. de Trafalgar and C. ost Feare. This latter name was often applied to present day Cape Lookout before it was used for its present site to the south-west. Chesapeake Bay was depicted as just a small bay on Hondius' map of 1606 as John Smith was yet to explore these waters. The Gerritsz terminated at this point, and only two placenames appeared. Blaeu draws largely on the Smith map for much of the nomenclature but introduces some English ones from an unknown source. The most important is Newport nesa, Newport News, founded in 1621 and apparently shown here for the first time on a printed map. Also new are Bermouth, Stortingen and Arglas. The two Indian figures from Hondius' map form part of the cartouche on Blaeu's." (Burden) Hand colour.Full margins.Very good/mint condition

Attractive early map of Virginia.Decorative example of the German edition of this sought after map of the Chesapeake. The map is based upon Augustine Hermann's map of 1673 and later maps of the region. Extends from the Saquesahanoug R in the North to Pomejok and C. de Trafalgar in the South, and inland along the Powhatan R and Toppoahonoc R. Jamestown is located, as is Smythe's Island?Excellent hand colour and in mint condition

A beautiful and uncommon depiction of North America with California clearly labeled as an island, the Great Lakes in an inaccurate configuration, a strange Mt. range alluding to the Rockies, but misplaced.Good hand colour.Very good condition.

A Dutch re-issue of a cornerstone map of the Southern States and Central America finely engraved and in fine condition.Covens and Mortier’s map copies that by De L’Isle, of 1703, as one of the first accurate depictions of the lower reaches of the Mississippi and the Delta. Mexico and New Mexico are well-detailed, reflecting the active Jesuit missionary/explorers population but the eastern seaboard of North America shows the English colonies as a disproportionately narrow strip of settlements hugging the coast.Martin & Martin, Maps Of Texas And Southwest, cf. pp.92-93.

A very good example of the Buffalo Map.North America from New Mexico to the St Lawrence and from Florida to Lake Superior. Insets of the Niagara Falls and a Bison. Highly decorative, one of the classic maps for any collection. Information for the map is based on explorations by French explorers and fur traders, Jesuit priests, and Spanish explorers, many of whose routes are shown on the map. Two striking cartouches dominate this map: in upper left, Niagara Falls, missionary and Indians, and in lower right, a buffalo with Indians.Fine original body colour; very good example.

A very good example of the Homan Heirs 1737 map of the British Territories in North America. Divided into four separate maps derived from the work of Herman Moll. Covers much of the eastern coast of North America including Nova Scotia & Newfoundland, New England (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, etc..), Virginia & Maryland, and Carolina ( now North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) and northern Florida. The upper left quadrant features a map of the Maritime Provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Offers wonderful detail both inland and offshore, with special attention to the shoals. Upper right hand quadrant features much of New England, New York and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Jerseys are shown spit into eastern and western provinces according to their original charters. New York extends northward past Lake Champlain, which is itself set significantly south and west of its actual location. Notes Albany. Lower left quadrant features a map of those parts of Virginia and Maryland adjoining the Chesapeake Bay. Lower right quadrant features much of what is today North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Northern Florida. Notes land dispute with the Spanish territories with regard to the rights to Northern Florida, referencing various charters to the Carolinas. Predates Georgia. Excellent detail both inland and along the coast. Bounded on the western end by the Appalachian Mountains. Below the map is a large text area with notations on the land and peoples depicted, including a special commentary dedicated to the Iroquois Nation.Full original colour.Slight stain invisible on map. Interesting map of North America. In north eastern part of North America some interesting lakes and rivers are drawn, with a note: Terres vues par Tchirikow en 1741. Tchirikow was a Russian explorer visiting the Bearing Straits...Indian tribes.Interesting division of states on eastern seaboard.Compass rose.Original outline colour.Mint condition.

Amerique Septentrionale dressee sur les Relations les plus modernes des Voyageurs et Navigateurs et divisee suivant les differentets possessions des Europeens.**Scarce first edition of De Vaugondy's large map of North America. The region east of the Appalachians is referred to as Chouanous et Cheraquis. Extensive notes on the Mississippi Valley Indians, French and English forts and other details. The River systems which drain into the Mississippi are also of note, along with the Belle Riviere, which seems to extend from Southern Kansas or Northern Oklahoma to the west, quite uniquely and mythically so. The Coast of California still includes Nlle. Albion, Quiviera and the entrance discovered by Martin d'Augilar. The lands to the north are Terres Inconnues. The Missouri River extends far into the West. This is in near mint condition with original outline colour. Pedley 448.

Bellin's fascinating chart of the northernmost parts of North America, from Labrador and Baffin Bay to the barely delineated coast of Alaska, or "lands seen by the Russians in 1728. In between are notes on explorations by the Russians, Juan de Fuca, and Admiral Fuente, as well as speculation on the likely position of the Western Sea (Mer de l'Ouest). From Prevost d'Exiles' influential collection of travel narratives, Histoire Generale des Voyages.

Attractive map of old Louisiana and northern and western Florida showing the French claims west of the Appalachians. Map covers an area from Lakes Michigan and Erie south to the Gulf Coast including the South Carolina and Georgia coastline. A large Louisiana stretches westward and northward to New Mexico with many Indian lands noted and some areas as "unknown." The Mississippi River runs southward to the Gulf; and map shows the Texas coast to San Luis Pass below Galveston and names Natchez, New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile Bay and Pensacola and the northwestern Florida coast, showing St. Augustine & Cape Canaveral on the east coast. Map has very decorative title cartouche of leaf, flower and scroll motif.Excellent full hand colour.Very good condition.
