Title: WORLD UNIVERSI ORBIS DESCRIPTIO AD USUM NAVIGANTIUM
Cartographer: Magini
Size: 13*17.5cms
Printed: 1596/ Venice
Ref: M1558
Category: Maps/World/

A mariner's map based on Gerard Mercator's large world map of 1569. The engraver has added a fanciful range of mountains on the southern continent. The map is crisscrossed by rhumb lines and the oceans are stipple engraved in the Italian style. Text on verso. The map comes from a scarce pirate edition published by Petrus Keschedt in Cologne one year after the publication of Magini's original work. Ortelius informed Magini in November 1597 about this and the publication was stopped till 1608 when a new edition was issued by Keschedt. Although the map is based on Magini's 1596 Geographiae it is in fact a new plate. The Magini's 1596 edition of Geographiae was the first reduced size version of Mercator's atlas. This is the second. Superb example of the first state double hemisphere map of the world, which includes many of the great 17th Century cartographic errors. A massive land extension north of California reaches nealy to Asia and shows the Straits of Anian and NW Passage, with dozens of early place names on the NW Coast, including Quivira Regnum, which appears twice. North America is misconfigured in a manner similar to early world maps by Hondius. A partial New Zealand and Australia both appear. The tracks of Magellan's circumnavigation are shown, along with other cartographic misconceptions. cartography. Four allegorical female figures represent the four continents (Europe, Asia, America and Africa), along with exotic allegorical scenes. Two celestial models are shown center top and bottom.Superb early full color example, with wide margins and no restorations. Shirley 431. NOT to be confused with the later and more numerous Second edition of 1677 or the even later Stoopendaal reissue.

Printed: 1720c Nuremberg
Ref: M973

Very decorative double hemisphere World map.The map contains two smaller celestial spheres, above and below the hemisphere maps, showing the northern and southern skies and two smaller globes showing summer and winter time views. The four corners of the map depict windheads and natural phenomena such as water-spouts, volcanic eruptions and rainbows. Geographically, there are a number of interesting features on the map a large body of water is to the west of Hudson's Bay; the entire North American northwest is left blank reflecting great uncertainty of the region; the French are still firmly entrenched in Canada (Nova Francia); Tasmania (Diemens Land) is still far-removed from mainland Australia (Nova Hollandia); New Zealand is a partial coastline. The sailing routes of Dampier and others are marked.Original colour.Exceptionally good condition,no repairs, good margins,no added modern colour.

Cartographer: Seutter.M.
Size: 50*58cms
Printed: 1728 Augsberg
Ref: M1442
Category: Maps/World/

A Stunning example. This is one of the most graphic 18th century world maps. The bold engraving style follows Carel Allard's map of 1696 with the central twin hemisphere map surrounded by several smaller maps on various projections. California is an island and is shown five times on the sheet. In Asia, Japan is depicted in a bizarre shape that incorporates Terra Yedso (Hokkaido). The coastlines of Australia and New Zealand are beginning to take shape, and New Guinea is shown twice - once in each hemisphere. The map is filled with detail including the tracks of several explorers. The maps are set in a richly engraved background of clouds with numerous wind heads, lesser spheres and two cartouches.Very good condition

Title: WORLD PLANIGLOBII TERRESTRIS MAPPE-MONDE
Cartographer: Homann Heirs
Size: 47*55cms
Printed: 1746 Nuremberg
Ref: M1103
Category: Maps/World/

Compiled by J. M. Haas, a professor of mathematics at Wittenburg, this important map is one of the finest double hemispheres produced by the Homann's. The world is divided into two large hemispheres, which occupy the center of the map. They are surrounded by four smaller globes showing various views of the earth from the north and south pole. In addition there are two small diagrams depicting the axis of the earth in relation to the sun. Although California is no longer depicted as an island, the great northwest is still left blank above California, and the Hudson Bay is still open ended in the northwest corner. America's fanciful North West coast is based on the early Russian explorations in that area and includes inaccurate views of the poles. Both Australia and New Zealand are incomplete, and Yedo is shown as part of mainland Asia north of Japan. The map is ornamented with two highly decorative cartouches with titles in Latin and French. This fascinating impression includes a colour key attached to the bottom of the map, which assigns the various colours to the principal western religions. The inclusion of this specific colouring gives this map an alternate purpose by identifying the prominent religion of specific areas around the world. This is a rare example and a fascinating translation of Homann's simple world map.Left hand margin added at top, centre fold strenghtened at bottom otherwise good.condition.

Bellin's well known and attractive oversize folio sheet World map on Mercator's projection. Much of interest, including a very clear nautical passage cutting across North America, an inaccurate North West coastline which shows virtually no knowledge of Alaska, tasmania joined to Australia,a large and decorative title cartouche, wind compass at bottom centre, etc.Folds but a very good example of this map.
