A Stunning example. This is one of the most graphic 18th century world maps. The bold engraving style follows Carel Allard's map of 1696 with the central twin hemisphere map surrounded by several smaller maps on various projections. California is an island and is shown five times on the sheet. In Asia, Japan is depicted in a bizarre shape that incorporates Terra Yedso (Hokkaido). The coastlines of Australia and New Zealand are beginning to take shape, and New Guinea is shown twice - once in each hemisphere. The map is filled with detail including the tracks of several explorers. The maps are set in a richly engraved background of clouds with numerous wind heads, lesser spheres and two cartouches.Very good condition

Title: WORLD PLANIGLOBII TERRESTRIS MAPPE-MONDE
Cartographer: Homann Heirs
Size: 47*55cms
Printed: 1746 Nuremberg
Ref: M1103
Category: Maps/World/

Compiled by J. M. Haas, a professor of mathematics at Wittenburg, this important map is one of the finest double hemispheres produced by the Homann's. The world is divided into two large hemispheres, which occupy the center of the map. They are surrounded by four smaller globes showing various views of the earth from the north and south pole. In addition there are two small diagrams depicting the axis of the earth in relation to the sun. Although California is no longer depicted as an island, the great northwest is still left blank above California, and the Hudson Bay is still open ended in the northwest corner. America's fanciful North West coast is based on the early Russian explorations in that area and includes inaccurate views of the poles. Both Australia and New Zealand are incomplete, and Yedo is shown as part of mainland Asia north of Japan. The map is ornamented with two highly decorative cartouches with titles in Latin and French. This fascinating impression includes a colour key attached to the bottom of the map, which assigns the various colours to the principal western religions. The inclusion of this specific colouring gives this map an alternate purpose by identifying the prominent religion of specific areas around the world. This is a rare example and a fascinating translation of Homann's simple world map.Left hand margin added at top, centre fold strenghtened at bottom otherwise good.condition.SOLD

Australia is shown with partially defined east and south coastlines, and is attached to Terre de Diemen and Nova Guinea. The western coastline of New Zealand is shown and there is fair detail in the Salomon Islands. The chart is beautifully engraved with two compass roses and a decorative cartouche containing the English title. French and Dutch titles appear below the map. VERY GOOD CONDITION.
