Printed: 1648 Frankfurt
Ref: P1194

RARE..The famous Merian panorama of 17th century Paris.Paris, an important contemporary visual record by one of the great engravers of his time. The city is viewed from a vantage point in the present day Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, looking towards the south west, over the Hospitale de S.Louis, to the vast but now long-vanished fortifications of Étienne Marcel, across the city, Notre Dame just left of center, the Louvre and the Tuileries gardens to the right, continuing across the Seine to the left-bank and the open countryside beyond. The foreground includes a back-view self-portrait of the artist seated on a boulder sketching. This fine view is from Merian's `Topographia Franconiae' published in Frankfurt between 1648 and 1656 with text by Martin Zeiler. The condition is overall very good,a good strong impression, there are 2 repairs(invisible) and folds as issued. This is an important and rare panorama. |

Title: REIMS
Author: Meisner.D
Size: 10*15cms
Printed: 1650c Frankfurt
Ref: P1479
|
Charming copper engraving of Reims.
Daniel Meisner first published his "Thesaurus Philo-politicus" in 1623 and is later known as the "Sciographia Cosmica" this series continued to be expanded under it's publisher Eberhard Kieser's (Neurenberg) supervision after Meisner's death in 1625.
Each engraving is distinguished by a motto above the image and emblematic verses (usually in Latin and German) beneath. The work is a fascinating combination of two popular genres - the Emblem Book and the books of Town Plans, e.g. Braun and Hogenberg. The allegorical imagery is often cryptic, even bizarre - but always fascinating.
Among the master engravers and illustrators that contributed to this series, usually working from earlier sources, were Matthäus Merian, Sebastian Furck, Christian Stimmer and possibly Meisner himself, who conceived the work and contributed many of the verses. It is remarkable that these relatively small size etching are often more precize and accurate than other and later works.
In the introduction of his original work Meisner is called 'Poeta Laureatus' or 'Celebrated Poet'.
Very good condition. |
