DANIEL'S DREAM

£495

Rare and highly sought after early woodblock World maps depicting Daniel's Dream. Good attractive border

This wood cut map shows continents with the four beasts of Daniel's Dream Map..

According to Ernst Gallner this is the 7th version and second block: this edition of the map is slightly smaller than the first edition. For this 1564 edition, the woodblock was re-cut and surrounded in an elaborate picture-frame style border. Sigmund Fererabends initials are found centre bottom as FSC.

This somewhat curious map of Europe, Africa, and Asia is to be found in apocalyptic literature originally emanating from Wittenberg in c1530 . One of the first impressions of the map was used by the printer Hans Lufft to illustrate two works: one a commentary on the prophet Daniel by Martin Luther (1530) and another linking the vision of Daniel with the assaults of the Turks on the perimeters of Christian Europe at the time.

Cut out of publication and attached to hand laid paper probably in the 18th or 19th century as was common.

Very good condition for this rare map.
