LONDINIUM URBS PRAECIPUA REGNI ANGLIAE

£2000

Stunning full original hand colour example of this scarce view originally published end of seventeenth century by Pierre Aveline but this Latin example most likely was published by Giuseppe Remondini in Italy in the Eighteenth century.

The only original colour example available and unique.

This Latin version depicts an early pre-fire view of London taken from the south, first published around 1665, the year before the Fire of London.

Southwark is visible in the foreground and includes figures on horseback and about their daily business, the Thames beyond is populated with a variety of vessels, while the spires of the City may be seen on the north bank of the Thames. St Paul's (pre-Wren and his dome) dominates the skyline and the spires of other City churches are discernible. A ten point numbered key identifies those buildings of note. The simple title appears in a decorative surround above the view. Although the title cartouche has been changed, the tower of St Paul’s Cathedral and other details continue to show the city in its pre-Fire state, including the Elizabethan theatres in Bankside.

Scouloudi records this as a variant of the view published by Aveline but does not record this Latin copy .

Beautiful original Eighteenth century hand colour in very good condition makes this an exceptional and unique version of this view of London. A collectors item
